About Alba

Hello, I am Alba McGowan and I’ve been teaching survival swimming techniques to children for 14 years. Before I got married and had kids I was a practicing dentist. I first learned about survival swimming programs for small children through Liz Walker. I brought my two kids to her and I was amazed to see the valuable skills they acquired through Liz's swim lessons. Then my husband and I moved to Europe with our two children and lived there for four years. Upon our return both of our children were going to school full time. I now had more time and wished to begin doing something that I would really love and that would benefit others as well.

I began to train to become a swimming instructor. I completed an intensive, in-water, hands-on training/qualification program which, in addition to learning swimming techniques, also included the study of childhood psychology. I became an Infant Aquatics swimming instructor. I also hold certifications in infant, child, and adult CPR and First Aid.

Nothing compares to what I am now doing. I feel I have found a job like no other. Even though I used to be a dentist, nothing I have ever done before compares to the sense of fulfillment I get from this job. I enjoy working with children, watching them conquer their fears, learning to swim, and gaining confidence. This confidence extends well beyond the swimming environment and in many cases improves their overall development. Many of my students have gone on to participate in competitive swimming and many other continue to safely enjoy various activities in the water. Moreover, in addition to potentially preventing a serious aquatic accident, I also enjoy the special bond that develops between myself and every child in my swim program.

Finally, I am excited to have the opportunity to teach your child how to swim!
