I became a certified Infant Aquatics® Instructor in February 2019, approximately 1 year after the birth of my first child. Living in a coastal city with easy access to multitude bodies of water, I knew I needed to get my baby enrolled in a swim survival program. I wanted him to be able to roll onto his back and breathe if he ever accidentally fell into a pool or off of a dock. I also wanted him to grow up LOVING and feeling confident in the water. I researched the different swim and self rescue programs out there and ultimately decided that Infant Aquatics was superior. Unfortunately, the closest instructor was over 100 miles away. Being that the lessons are 4 days a week for 6 weeks, this was not going to work for us. I immediately started thinking about getting certified myself. Not only was it important that my son learn this specific program, but I felt passionate that I wanted to make it accessible to our community.
I have always loved kids. I grew up with lots of younger cousins and babysat from the age of 12 years old through graduate school. I graduated from MUSC in 2004 with a Masters Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I worked as a Speech Language Pathologist for 8 years, in a variety of settings including schools. I feel very comfortable working with children of all ages and abilities. One of the most rewarding parts of being a SLP was seeing a child master a goal.
My goal with Infant Aquatics is to teach your infant to float and your toddler+ to swim towards targets while taking rests by floating. Babies who aren’t yet walking strongly will be taught self rescue skills. If an incident should occur, your baby will be able to roll onto his/her back and float while calling for help. Your walker or older child will confidently be able to swim, then float, then swim. Holy Mackerel!!
Holy Mackerel Infant Aquatics has group classes starting at 2 months of age, and private lessons starting at 6 months through 5 years. Please contact me for more information on private lessons and group classes.
