Hello, my name is Karina Joya and I was born and raised in sunny Southern California where every summer I was surrounded by pools, beaches and lakes; I absolutely love being in the water. I have worked in child care for the past 10 years and am currently an infant and toddler teacher.
Having a pool in my backyard, I would notice parents of young children were always cautious and nervous whenever they came over to visit. This is when I began researching drowning prevention and infant survival training, which led me to Infant Aquatics and Judy Heumann.
I traveled to Colorado for six weeks and completed over 100 hours of hands-on in-water training learning the methods of teaching infants to float and toddlers to swim float swim. Despite my background in education of young children and their developmental stages, I was amazed to discover how much young children can learn in a matter of weeks.
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5 years. So, if you have a pool or even know someone with a pool, it is important for your child to be taught how to survive in the water. My goal is to teach young children self-rescue swimming skills and give parents a bit more peace of mind knowing their children are safer in and around water.
