My name is Casey Ballard, owner and instructor of Swim Smart Infant Aquatics® in North County San Diego. After spending nine years working in corporate America, I decided to take a leap to pursue something more meaningful to me, teaching young children life-saving water skills, all rooted in purpose and passion. My connection to the water began at a young age through competitive swimming, junior lifeguards, and a lifelong love for the ocean, which shaped my respect for water safety and the importance of learning proper skills early.
Water safety has always felt personal to me. When I was five years old, I had a near-drowning experience myself. I had been a strong swimmer the summer before, but after time away from the water, my skills were not the same. During a family trip to Hawaii that next spring, my mom saw me struggling and had to jump in to save my life. That moment showed my family how quickly accidents can happen and how important consistent swim practice is for young children.
According to the CDC as of 2026, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children 4 and under and living in North County San Diego, where pools are common and the ocean is just minutes away, water safety is essential.
I had the privilege of training with Judy Heumann at Infant Aquatics in Longmont, Colorado, who brings over 50 years of experience in developing and teaching age-appropriate aquatic survival techniques for infants and toddlers. My training included over 150 hours of in-water instruction, along with education in child psychology, anatomy, and development.
The Swim-Float-Swim Infant Aquatics method teaches children how to survive an unexpected water accident while also building the foundation to become strong, confident swimmers. I am excited to bring this program to North County San Diego and share my passion and love for the water with families in the community!
