About Sommer

Hi, I’m Sommer Howe! I was born and raised in Northern Indiana and am glad to have never moved away. I live in Plymouth with my husband, Brad, and our son Harrison. We love to spend our summers boating and swimming at our campsite that sits on a lake in Marcellus, Michigan.

After attending college, meeting my husband, and graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology, COVID closed everything down. At the time, I was working in a hospital and a high school contemplating continuing my education. With COVID, my jobs had become eliminated and I realized that I did not want to stay in the medical field or be in a high school classroom. I took a job as a pharmacy technician that paid the bills for the time and started a family with my husband.

When our son was born, and eventually on the move, I was worried about him being around open water. I wanted him to be a strong swimmer, unlike myself. My mother-in-law had just moved into a house with an inground pool and we acquired a boat with lake access. I enrolled my son in basic training lessons at Little Fins Swim School at 16 months old. After putting him through the basic training, I was amazed with how quickly he learned and my constant fear of taking him near water lessened.

After some time and continuing progression lessons, I was seeing the need for another instructor in our area. After about a year of thinking about getting myself trained, I decided to voice my thoughts to my husband and Marci Harmon (Founder of Little Fins Swim School). My husband was very supportive with my intentions to train and Marci encouraged me to get certified so that I could come back to Indiana and be a third instructor in our pool. As nervous as I was for change, I can happily say that I took the plunge and attended an intense, six-week long training course in Colorado with Judy Heumann to become a certified Infant Aquatic Survival® Specialist. I am excited to be making a positive impact on the lives of children and their parents while also prioritizing my family.
